| A State of Normalcy Intro/dictionary definition What defines normalcy and is it even able to be defined? Normal is a term we use day to day but do we really know what it means? The dictionary defines it as: 1. conforming with or constituting an accepted standard, model, or pattern; corresponding to the median or average of a large group in type, appearance, achievement, function, development, etc.; natural; usual; standard; regular 2. The usual state, amount, degree, etc.; esp., the median or average. The dictionary perceives normal as a state of nothing out of the ordinary sort of like an unspoken standard that people and things are held up to. My definition I perceive normal as just a thought. I think that because normal is a standard people hold themselves, others, and thing to. Normal is just what people look up to as a standard. If you have lower standards then your normal will appear strange to a person with high standers. Therefore I do not have a sense of normalcy because normal changes as I do. Any person’s sense of normalcy will continue to change as there life changes so there can never really be one definition of normal. What is your definition? I have explained to what my ideas of normal are perhaps you have a different opinion. Perhaps you could think that there is a solid standard that most everyone follows. Maybe you don’t think that what happened to you and around have any effect on your perception of normal. Either way normal is a relative term it is not something that can be put in boundaries. So, if you find yourself putting boundaries around something just remember not even normalcy can be put in a box. Conclusions I conclude with the fact that there is, nor will ever be a permanent sense of normalcy because of the reasons following. One, because the dictionary perceives normal as a state of nothing out of the ordinary sort of like an unspoken standard that people and things are held up to there is never a time were every thing is just as we would like it. Also standards change from year to year so there can never be a constant standard. Two, Any persons sense of normalcy change as there life changes so there can never really be one definition of normal. Three, not even normalcy can be put in a box. Therefore normal is just a word we find ourselves tossing around day to day with out thinking what it really truly means. |
